The Altoona Triathlon Club was the brainchild of Jason Bernstein, Kerrie Bernstein, Gary McKibben, and Tom VonTersch. Following the 2008 triathlon season we began to hold some informational sessions and began to determine a direction of the club. The name and color scheme Orange and Dark Green were picked with no significant reason other than they are colors not normally seen on the race circuit.
By November of 2008 it was determined that there was interest enough in attempting to formally create a club. It was made clear to the group that we were all new to what we were about to do so mistakes and missteps would be made along the way. A website was initially created altoonatriathlonclub.com. We could not do much with the site but it was a start. A yahoo group site was also created and signs began to pop up around workout facilities.
Prior to the new year meetings were held and a steady base was beginning to take shape. Committees were forming and the club was expanding. A mission statement was created and the ideas and principles that the club would stand for were written down and agreed upon. As of January it was determined that the club would be made official and elections were held, informally, but at least the club had a head and the ability to begin to make decisions.
In the early get go membership was free, but it was not long that dues were created. Shirts came along with a logo and the initial slogan of “If it were easy, everyone would do it”. It was not long that the numbers doubled and the club was formalized and incorporated. The website was changed to www.altoonatriathlonclub.com. Membership continued to grow as did group workouts and a general feeling of good permeated throughout all of the community. The Altoona Triathlon Club became official and life was good…
